Spanish Royal Couple at the Frankfurter Buchmesse
The Spanish royal couple, are attending the Frankfurt International Bookfair, in Germany on Tuesday. The 74th âFrankfurter Buchmesseâ, funded by the German governmentâs âA New Start for Cultureâ programme, is expecting a whopping 4000 exhibitors from 95 countries conducting over 2000 events, says the press release published on the Buchmesse website.
The opening ceremony will have the presence of German President – Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Nancy Faeser – German Interior Minister, Defence Minister – Christine Lambrecht, Family Affairs Minister – Lisa Paus and Minister of State for Culture – Claudia Roth.
Spain represents a major share in the international book fair. The literary keynote speakers from Spain, are Irene Vallejo and Antonio Muñoz Molina. Spain has over 200 authors, 320 exhibitors and agents participating and representing our literature and culture. Spain is the third-largest continent participating in the fully booked Literary Agents & Scouts Centre after the UK and the US. The programme is said to take each person on their own individual journey resonating with the slogan âSpilling Creativityâ. The pavilion is described in the well-known Spanish Author – Carmen Martin Gaiteâs words: âStories are like cherries: if you reach into a bowl of cherries, you never end up with just one piece of fruit.â
The Grand fair will be attended by 4000 distinguished journalists, renowned politicians, leaders and influential authors. The president of Frankfurt Bookfair says, âI am much looking forward to seeing many authors, publishers and partners once again. Personal encounters are more important than ever since interacting in person helps reduce polarization.â
The five-day book fair is an event to emphasise that book culture is as prestigious as any other. The theme for this year is âTranslate, Transfer, Transformâ, a step to protect the book industry. Karin Schmidt-Friedrichs, the Chairwoman of the German Publishers & Booksellers Association, says, âIt is an important event for promoting international understanding. In a world in which ever deeper fissures are appearing between political, cultural and ideological outlooks, the book fair creates space for peaceful, democratic exchange.â
The Frankfurt Bookfair gives great importance to literary translators and their work. Mohsin Hamid, a British-Pakistani novelist says, âWithout translators, I would have been half the reader that I am. My own books are translated into many languages that I cannot speak. Without translators, I would be a fraction of the writer that I am.
